Mammography newsBreast Care Center at Northside Hospital-Forsyth in Georgia has started to offer its patients a new service, digital breast tomosynthesis, which is widely known as 3D mammography. The new service is available thanks to a new Selenia Dimensions System, from Hologic.

While patients undergo traditional mammography screening, breast tomosynthesis is carried out which includes generating various images of the breast tissue using low doses of radiation. The generated images are reconstructed, using a computer, to build up a 3D model of the breast.

Dr. Shannon Norris, a radiologist at Northside Hospital, said "Tomosynthesis allows radiologists to see the inner structure of the breast in a way that we never have before, even allowing us to look at individual layers of the breast," adding "The technology also can help detect cancers that may have been missed by traditional mammography, especially in patients with dense breast tissue, and can help reduce the recall of patients for follow-up mammograms and biopsies."

The new technology is helping in detection of more new cases of breast cancer. Statistics say that 1 in each 9 women will develop the disease. However, high cure rates can be achieved if breast cancer was detected at its earlier stages. Deidre Dixon, director of radiology services, Northside Hospital, said "More cases of breast cancer are diagnosed and treated at Northside Hospital than at any other hospital in the southeast. We want to give our patients the very best tools for early detection."
