Healthcare IT Validates With DICOM Standard 2D and 3D Multi-Frame Breast Tomosynthesis Exams From Participating Mammography Vendors

November 22, 2011—Ridgefield, CT—CoActiv Medical announces a demonstrated ability to acquire, display and archive the new DICOM standard breast tomosynthesis exams in its EXAM-PACS® web-based PACS--including the Hologic 2D and 3D Combo multi-frame exams. The company will be demonstrating this new advanced capability at its booth, #7300, at the Radiological Society of North American (RSNA) conference this month.

Digital breast tomosynthesis is rapidly gaining acceptance for breast cancer screening as a step-up replacement for regular FFDM exams,” says Ed Heere, CoActiv president and CEO. “It utilizes a digital X-ray that records a series of low-dose, high-resolution images while traversing a small arc around the breast. These multi-frame 3D images are then combined with the standard 2D FFDM images, acquired at the same time, to form the complete exam.”  According to many mammographers, breast tomosynthesis provides studies with increased clarity and a degree of enhanced, slice-based detail significant enough to reduce some of the false-positives and false-negatives associated with standard 2D mammographic imaging and could significantly reduce call-backs and minimize re-examinations.

CoActiv EXAM-PACS is among the first in the industry to support these exams. According to Heere, “CoActiv is committed to keeping our PACS responsive to physician needs and in the forefront of technology. Our ability to acquire, display and archive DICOM standard breast tomosynthesis exams is just one example of this commitment. CoActiv was also in the forefront of support for other emerging modalities such as breast specific gamma imaging, support for mobile devices such as the iPhone, iPad, and Android and cloud-based archive storage of non-DICOM data such as prescriptions and reports.”
