Healthcare IT news A recent study is suggesting that as a result to potential bonus payments of around $1.5 billion, radiologists should do more in reviewing and replying to federal regulations of the meaningful use initiative. The study is highlighted in the September issue of the Journal of the American College of Radiology.

The meaningful use initiative has become one of the most important issues due to the huge incentives offered to the facilities that adopt certified electronic health record (EHR) systems. Meanwhile, a lot of meaningful use experts say that various radiologists have a false idea about being "left out" of the incentives provided via meaningful use initiative. Other radiologists think that the adoption of EHR systems is technically impractical.

Yet, as Murray A. Reicher, MD, FACR, co-author of the article and chairman of DR Systems, Inc., says "with diligent preparation, including the adoption of new technology and workflows, the vast majority of radiologists can qualify before October 2012 to capture the full available rewards and avoid later penalties,"

Dr. Reicher suggested that radiologists should first improve their knowledge in regards to the EHR technologies and their clinical outcome. He is also encouraging radiologists to get involved in their hospital information system (HIS) planning process.

Dr. Reicher said "The regulations do not make it easy for radiologists and other specialists to qualify, but they will need to comply nevertheless, using existing and potentially emerging technologies. Ultimately, the requirement to collect and communicate clinical information in a standardized manner may finally provide radiologists the clinical integration required to provide ideal patient care,"
