CT_for_childrenCT scans have been among the most important medical imaging procedures, as they provide doctors with highly-detailed images that aid them in diagnosing a wide range of diseases and conditions. However, concerns have been raised about the high doses of radiation delivered to patients during CT procedures. Recently, Arnold Schwarzenegger, the governor of California, signed a new bill that aims to limit the delivery of high radiation doses to patients in the State. The new bill represents a response to the reports mentioning that hundreds of patients in California were exposed to high radiation doses during brain CT scans for stroke in 2008 and 2009.

According to the new bill, hospitals and clinics are to hold records for radiation doses delivered during CT scans. They are also to inform their patients and doctors about any cases of radiation overdoses delivered to them. During 2009, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles had recorded cases of radiation overdose involving 269 patients. Some of these patients had up to eight times more than the expected doses.  Until now, six hospitals in California reported to have cases of radiation overdoses delivered to their patients. Experts mentioned that several side effects may occur due to radiation exposure, such as hair loss, headaches, and may even cause cancer in severe cases. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have recently released guidelines that regulate radiation equipment and radiation doses delivered during medical imaging procedures. However, each state in the US is responsible for monitoring the use of radiation machines and making sure that only qualified individuals are allowed to operate them. Alex Padilla, a California state senator, said “There is an urgent need for protocols and safeguards, the bill will provide physicians the information they need to track dosage levels, identify errors and prevent patients from receiving overdoses.”
