PACS news MAGNETOM Skyra 3 Tesla from Siemens Healthcare delivering high quality imaging

The Clinical Imaging Facility at Swansea University’s Institute of Life Science (ILS) has recently installed a MAGNETOM® Skyra 3 Tesla MRI system from Siemens Healthcare at its state-of-the-art research centre. The ILS Phase Two development was officially opened by the First Minister of Wales, The Rt. Hon Carwyn Jones, who viewed the Siemens Healthcare system during his visit to the pioneering medical research facilities.

The MAGNETOM Skyra 3T is being used for scientific medical research and is handling a mixed research workload of MR spectroscopy, neuroradiology, tractography, Diffusion Tensor Imaging and functional MRI.

The MAGNETOM Skyra offers Tim® 4G (total imaging matrix) functionality, rapidly providing clear images. Tim technology assists MRI with flexibility, accuracy and speed to shorten image acquisition. It offers up to 204 coil elements with up to 128 channels for flexible accurate parallel imaging, combined with 48 RF channels. Tim’s digital Direct RF allows for high signal purity and stability with all transmit and receive components located at the magnet. Its capabilities are further enhanced by Dot®, which assists research by optimising and automating positioning and alignment of slices, providing consistent image quality.

The system also incorporates a 70cm Open Bore design to accommodate a variety of subject types and sizes for subject comfort. The option of an illuminated coloured MoodLight on the front panel is also available and can be changed according to subject preference to aid relaxation.
