Digital radiography news A researching team from Sweden announced that they have designed a new method for determining the lowest possible radiation doses delivered to children during CT scans. The new method means less radiation exposure for children while still maintaining good quality of the images.

Kerstin Ledenius, a medical physicist from the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, said that too much reduction of radiation doses during CT results in less clear images, which means that some small details could be missed.

Ledenius and her team at the Queen Silvia Children's Hospital designed and evaluated a new method for determining radiation doses. This method determines the lowest possible radiation dose that radiologists consider enough to generate images with high details that can help in diagnosis.

Ledenius said that the new method is already applied at the Queen Silvia Children's Hospital. She is expecting other hospitals to start use it as well. She said "Adjusting exposure is important, as a small patient does not need the same exposure as a large one," She continued "Children also differ anatomically from adults, which affects the image quality needed. Our method ensures the best possible CT scanning, combining images of high quality with the least possible exposure to radiation."
