Siemens Offers An Integrated Whole-body Molecular MR System.

digital radiography newsSiemens Healthcare has recently unveiled its new system, Biograph mMR, the world's first integrated whole-body molecular MR with simultaneous data acquisition technology. This revolutionary system includes a magnetic resonance (MR) scanner and an integrated PET (Positron Emission Tomography) diagnosis system with an architecture that performs as one. Siemens developers in the new 3-tesla hybrid system have succeeded for the first time to develop a system that captures MR and PET data with a whole-body system.  At the University Hospital Klinikum rechts der Isar of the Munich Technical University, Germany, the Biograph mMR system was installed.

Since MRI does not release ionizing radiation, Biograph mMR may offer additional benefit with lower-dose screening. The Biograph mMR opens new opportunities for research, such as the improvement of new biomarkers or new therapeutic approaches.

Walter Maerzendorfer, CEO of the Business Unit Magnetic Resonance at Siemens Healthcare mentioned that "Biograph mMR is the latest breakthrough innovation of Siemens in the field of diagnostic imaging. It will be a new instrument for driving personalized medicine forward”. In addition, Britta Fuenfstueck, CEO of the Business Unit Molecular Imaging at Siemens Healthcare explained "Biograph mMR is designed to simultaneously acquire morphology, function, and metabolism for the entire body”.
The integration of MR and PET into a single system enables simultaneous acquisition and brings the potential to revolutionize the detection of several conditions. Molecular MR can scan the entire body in within 30 minutes for the combined tests; compared to one hour or more for sequential MR and PET examinations that is suggested in the Initial research with this system.

Siemens predicts a large range of clinical applications for molecular MR involving identification and staging of malignancies in an early stage, therapy planning with surgery planning and therapy control.
