Fusion is as the word says, it "fuses" images from different modalities so that not only pathology, but also function, i.e., activity, can be determined.  A person might have a mass that is visible in a CT image, but only a Nuclear Medicine or PET scan will show the level of activity in the mass, indicating potential malignancy.  There are several ways that the images can be fused.  Some viewers allow super-positioning, showing more or less of either image by, for example, moving a mouse.  Other viewers allow one image to be shown above the other one, basicially "cutting" through either one.
