Epiphyseal Dysplasia

  • A group of disorders marked by developmental abnormalities of epiphyses and manifested by short and thick digits, deformities of the hips, knee, and ankles, and short stature. Two major categories are recognized:
Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita(spine and long bones) and multiple epiphyseal dysplasia(long bones only). Within the latter group are also chondrodystrophia calcificans, chondrodysplasia punctata(dwarfs) and Meyers dysplasia(limited to femur).
  • Chondrodysplasia punctata is a form of multiple epiphyseal dysplasia characterized by calcification of unossified cartilaginous epiphyseal centers during the first year of life leading to short-limbed dwarfism, joint contractures, ichthyosiform skin lesions and cataracts
