University Hospital South Manchester UHSMUniversity Hospital South Manchester (UHSM) strengthens partnership with Alliance Medical to transform existing CMR unit.

UK, April 13, 2014 - Patients across the North West of England attending University Hospital South Manchester (UHSM) for specialist cardiac care are set to have their experience enhanced by a £4.2m investment in the North West Heart Center, creating a state-of-the-art cross-sectional cardiac imaging unit by spring 2015.

Alliance Medical, which currently operates the cardiac MRI scanning department at UHSM, is supporting the Trust in expanding its capacity to meet growing patient demand for sophisticated, non-invasive cardiac imaging across Greater Manchester.

High quality, cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging enables clinicians to provide timely and accurate patient diagnosis, guide treatment and at times replace invasive procedures.

The center expansion will comprise of a two floor extension housing an additional cardiac optimized Siemens Magnetom Skyra 3T MRI scanner, and a Toshiba Vision One cardiac enabled CT scanner.

The imaging produced by this state-of-the-art technology will support extended opening hours across the current seven-day imaging service, and a reduction in diagnostic imaging waiting times.

Additionally, the new center will accommodate research and academic staff and a dedicated multi-media training facility, bringing together clinical research, patient-centered translational research and clinical education all under one roof for the first time.

Dr Matthias Schmitt, UHSM Consultant Cardiologist and cross-sectional cardiac imaging lead, said: “This is an exciting development for cardiac patients across Greater Manchester, as a cutting-edge diagnostics facility will further support them to receive timely diagnosis and treatment when in our care at UHSM.”

Professor Simon Ray, UHSM Director of Research and Development, said: “This new development will offer clinical researchers from across the region access to state of the art facilities and will further promote Manchester as a center of excellence for cutting edge cardiac imaging research.”

David Loasby, Business Development Director at Alliance Medical, said: “We started working with UHSM in August 2008, and we are delighted to have strengthened our existing partnership with this new investment.

This demonstrates Alliance Medical’s commitment to working with its customers to ensure that patients have access to the best possible range of services and equipment to meet their needs”
