Novarad Wins Two Wisconsin PACS Contracts…

American Fork, Utah, October 27, 2012 – Aspen Orthopedics clinic and Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital are the latest facilities to select Novarad’s NovaPACS. Prairie du Chien will also install NovaRIS. Aspen Orthopedics, a surgical clinic specializing in hand and podiatry services, chose Novarad because of its long history of working with orthopedic practices. An additional factor was the short time to realize a return on investment. Novarad’s customers typically find the PACS has paid for itself in less than a year. Access to images and reports at Prairie du Chien will improve with NovaPACS. Radiologists from Gunderson Radiology Group staff the hospital’s imaging department. Radiologists can customize their viewing settings and have settings ‘follow them’ when they access images after hours at either the Gunderson Clinic or remotely from any workstation or mobile device. A complete diagnostic suite provider, in addition to PACS and RIS, Novarad offers CardioPACS, dose monitoring, mammography viewers, performance dashboards, mobile viewers, and on-site or cloud-based archives. Viztek Wins Lakeway Regional Medical Center for …

Raleigh, October 10, 2012 – Viztek, the advanced radiology solution company, has been selected to provide its Opal-RAD PACS solution at Lakeway Regional Medical Center in Austin, TX. The Viztek technology was selected for its sophisticated web-based capabilities that enable streamlined image distribution throughout the enterprise and the community for ultra-fast, secure communications with referring physicians. The PACS was deployed shortly after Lakeway opened in May to replace another PACS originally installed then at the facility. “Fast, convenient communications with our referral base was essential to our growth plans,” says Kevin Barker, MD, a radiologist at the busy mid-sized hospital.  “We believed that providing our clinicians with the highest level of service was essential to growing our new department. As we worked with the original PACS, it became immediately became apparent that the technology simply did not measure up to our expectations. In addition to lacking any ability to communicate beyond the enterprise, it was extremely slow and inefficient.” According to Barker, in addition to easy web-based communications beyond the enterprise, ease of use and speed were key considerations.  Viztek’s Opal-PACS was easy to use, integrated well with existing IT systems and boasted a range of additional benefits. “Viztek fit the bill,” he says. Another benefit of Opal-RAD PACS was its support for web-based viewing on mobile devices, while the original system was limited to image viewing in the radiology department only. Further, the advanced web technology also enabled flexible image access wherever a web browser is available. Opal-RAD’s built-in dictation also enabled report creation anywhere and anytime. Dr. Barker, who is also a partner in Community Radiology Associates in the Austin and San Antonio region, had been using a Viztek PACS in his practice for more than four years.  He knew firsthand that the technology was advanced, cost effective and reliable. “It seemed an obvious choice for Lakeway.  While the hospital had to scrap a PACS that was practically new, the Viztek PACS will serve us well and help us make our mark with local referrers.” About Viztek Viztek is a leading provider of complete digital software and hardware imaging solutions, backed by comprehensive training and support.  The company’s state-of-the-art Opal-RAD PACS and RIS suite delivers advanced connectivity and functionality at an affordable price.  Web-based architecture, with ultra-fast image streaming, ensures timely, efficient communications throughout the enterprise and beyond. With both advanced CR and DR technology, Viztek truly is a one-stop shop. Since 1999, Viztek’s comprehensive line of solutions has addressed the needs of radiologists, with special emphasis on the small- to medium-hospital market, as well as medical specialists from orthopedists to chiropractors and podiatrists.  Viztek has more than 1500 CR and 700 PACS solutions installed worldwide.  For more information, visit www.viztek.net or call 1-800-366-5343. Large Vendors for PACS Find New Opportunities to …

By Dr. Kamran Zamanian, CEO iData Research Introduction Combined, the U.S. PACS market is valued at over $1 billion, consisting of revenue generated from new unit sales, system upgrades and service & maintenance. As the market begins to mature, distributors will see a decline in new unit sales as the installed base reaches full penetration. However, market growth is expected to be sustained by revenue generated through service contracts as healthcare providers require some form of service & maintenance in order to sustain their PACS systems. Previously, the industry had predicted strong growth; however, it has been hindered by the slow recovery following the 2008 financial crisis and the recent focus of healthcare recovery spending on the implementation of EMR systems. Enterprise level solutions allow for higher adoption in more departments. Over 90% of PACS market revenue is generated in radiology and cardiology, however many PACS vendors have been working towards developing an enterprise-level solution that will allow them to capture multiple departments via a single system. PACS adoption in the radiology department is significantly higher than that of cardiology or other departments that have imaging needs. Due to the already high adoption rate of radiology PACS, growth in that segment will slow over the next few years compared to other departmental PACS systems. With the rise of enterprise-level solutions, PACS vendors will be able to market their systems to all departments within a facility and move into new market segments. Therefore, as a single PACS vendor can be utilized across all departments of a healthcare provider, smaller niche vendors will lose market share. Healthcare providers seem very receptive to the notion of an enterprise level solution. Ideally, this would give them the flexibility to expand their healthcare IT systems in stages while utilizing the same vendor, which allows them to share existing infrastructure and reduce IT staff training time. The number of installed PACS systems is expected to increase by over 1,000 from 2011 to 2018. Rapid adoption is being spurred by increased willingness to spend on PACS systems that were on back order since the economic recession. Adoption rates of PACS systems among the larger facilities are very high as many healthcare providers deem it necessary to have a solution in place that digitalizes their images. When a PACS vendor captures an installed base, it usually ensures a future revenue stream from that facility through system upgrades and service & maintenance. Typically, healthcare providers will not swap vendors, as it is costly and time consuming. The industry has seen that many PACS vendors have made it a priority to capture as much of the remaining installed base as possible by aggressively lowering prices. Thus, average selling prices are expected to begin declining as competition intensifies over the remaining installed base, which will further drive down the profitability of new unit sales. GE Healthcare continues to be the market leader in the U.S. PACS market, due to its first mover advantage and successes in the large hospital segment. Although GE Healthcare leads the U.S. PACS market, several other PACS vendors are catching up. It should be noted that many of the large PACS vendors are part of a corporation that carries multiple product lines and gives them access to a greater client base. Therefore, within the PACS market, several main vendors have captured a portion of the market and have significant footholds with regards to the number of healthcare facilities using their PACS system. Although there are several smaller vendors that have developed niches and compete in specific market spaces, they are increasingly finding themselves in direct competition with the larger vendors. As the market matures, this trend will intensify a tug-of-war between the remaining PACS vendors for customers.
