Hammers Healthcare Imaging Selects CoActiv Medical for Exam Management and …

Specialized Practice Finds Customized Solution That Supports Its Needs Effectively and Cost Effectively November 29, 2011—Chicago—Hammers Healthcare Imaging, a state-of-the-art diagnostic ultrasound practice in New Haven, CT, has selected CoActiv’s EXAM-PACS® for the management and archiving of its images for a full range of exams. “We needed a robust system that would support remote reading and provide more secure and reliable back-up than our current in-house solution at an affordable price,” said Elaine Hammers, practice administrator. In addition to image viewing, Hammers Imaging wanted a seamless interface to a range of its other IT systems, including a radiology information system (RIS) and billing application. “This would save our staff significant time and enhance accuracy by eliminating input of duplicate data,” she says.  “CoActiv also was able meet all our goals easily and cost effectively.” Poised for significant growth, Hammers Imaging is a single radiologist practice headed by Lynwood Hammers, DO, and supported by six technologists and four administrative staff. The busy practice performs more than 10,000 exams annually, including thyroid, OB, breast, musculoskeletal and a wide range of ultrasound-guided procedures.  According to Elaine Hammers, it performs more thyroid exams than any other practice in its geographic area and has become a staple in the community for these common exams. To add new efficiencies to the practice and ensure the security of its vital data, Hammers Healthcare Imaging sought to upgrade its current homegrown image management system which archived exams to a small onsite server managed by the practice.  The imaging center conducted a search of solutions appropriate for a smaller specialized imaging group and found CoActiv’s modular PACS implementation options an excellent choice for its highly specialized, but high-volume practice. The staff was impressed with CoActiv’s onsite new customer presentation and the level of personalized attention they received, although they were a relatively small and specialized practice group.  Additionally, Hammers Imaging had seen the system in operation in a neighboring practice and felt it would be an excellent choice to add greater overall digital sophistication to their operations. “Once installed, the CoActiv PACS and EXAM-VAULT® archiving ran smoothly and met our full range of needs,” says Hammers.  “We choose to store our exams on CoActiv’s cloud-based EXAM-VAULT archive, with data securely mirrored in four geographically distinct locations, including two Tier IV data centers.” Hammers notes that CoActiv also was able to migrate all of the practice’s existing data to the new archive and integrate its other IT systems so that all of the onsite software applications worked together seamlessly. Workflow is faster and problem-free, she notes, saying that everyone agrees that as a result of the integration with the practice’s overall IT system, managing practice data is easier and faster. “We feel much more secure with the sophisticated, managed EXAM-VAULT archiving system,” Elaine Hammers added.  “Storage is automatic and CoActiv is responsible for full system maintenance and upgrade.  We simply pay one fee per exam for the lifetime of the study, and we’re covered.  That helps us focus on our true mission—delivering a comprehensive array of exams that have made us one of the leading ultrasound practices in our community.” About CoActiv CoActiv Medical™ is a leading healthcare software and IT systems provider offering a full line of PACS, digital image and data storage services and related solutions for hospitals, imaging facilities and medical practices of all sizes.  CoActiv’s EXAM-PACS® family of web-based PACS solutions provide leading edge, affordable and scalable image management with sophisticated tools that cater to the needs of radiologists as well as a full range of other imaging specialists.  Available as both enterprise server-based and cloud-based solutions, EXAM-PACS is designed for easy integration into imaging facilities of any size. Novarad, First Provider to Offer Integrated PACS and …

RSNA Booth #7117 - Novarad(R) announced today that it has integrated PHS Technologies Group, LLC’s DoseMonitor(TM) ionizing radiation dose monitoring software engine with its NovaPACS(TM) product, creating the NovaDose(TM) solution. Novarad is the first PACS company to integrate with DoseMonitor. With NovaDose, users can directly access cumulative patient, exam and modality dose history from the PACS database. The software provides a robust alerting matrix to provide near-time visibility to potential excessive patient radiation dose before additional exposure occurs. Additionally, NovaDose provides dashboard reporting to allow users to analyze procedures and modalities. “This new integrated product offering enables Novarad customers to address one of the most pressing healthcare challenges of tracking cumulative ionizing dose exposure from diagnostic imaging procedures,” said Steve Fowler, product marketing director at Novarad Corporation. “By teaming with PHS Technologies, we have created a combined system that works seamlessly together to provide healthcare providers with alerts to help prevent overexposure based on a maximum threshold as defined by the facility.” DoseMonitor will automatically calculate a patient’s cumulative radiation dose and provide a customer-defined “red/yellow/green” type alerting system when an exam is ordered. In addition, by using DICOM data from NovaPACS, devices and examination procedures that no longer meet customer-determined dose specifications can be identified. The integration between the software platforms eliminates the need for facilities to have a separate server attached to the PACS for dose monitoring, reducing overall cost and providing significant flexibility for the customer. About PHS Technologies Group, LLC PHS Technologies Group, LLC develops products for monitoring cumulative medical imaging radiation dose. The company is based in Scottsdale, Arizona; and is a wholly owned subsidiary of PACSHealth, LLC, the developer of PACSHealth™ a PACS monitoring and audit tool currently installed at over 600 sites worldwide. CoActiv Medical Announces EXAM-PACS Support For Breast …

Validates With DICOM Standard 2D and 3D Multi-Frame Breast Tomosynthesis Exams From Participating Mammography Vendors November 22, 2011—Ridgefield, CT—CoActiv Medical announces a demonstrated ability to acquire, display and archive the new DICOM standard breast tomosynthesis exams in its EXAM-PACS® web-based PACS--including the Hologic 2D and 3D Combo multi-frame exams. The company will be demonstrating this new advanced capability at its booth, #7300, at the Radiological Society of North American (RSNA) conference this month. “Digital breast tomosynthesis is rapidly gaining acceptance for breast cancer screening as a step-up replacement for regular FFDM exams,” says Ed Heere, CoActiv president and CEO. “It utilizes a digital X-ray that records a series of low-dose, high-resolution images while traversing a small arc around the breast. These multi-frame 3D images are then combined with the standard 2D FFDM images, acquired at the same time, to form the complete exam.”  According to many mammographers, breast tomosynthesis provides studies with increased clarity and a degree of enhanced, slice-based detail significant enough to reduce some of the false-positives and false-negatives associated with standard 2D mammographic imaging and could significantly reduce call-backs and minimize re-examinations. CoActiv EXAM-PACS is among the first in the industry to support these exams. According to Heere, “CoActiv is committed to keeping our PACS responsive to physician needs and in the forefront of technology. Our ability to acquire, display and archive DICOM standard breast tomosynthesis exams is just one example of this commitment. CoActiv was also in the forefront of support for other emerging modalities such as breast specific gamma imaging, support for mobile devices such as the iPhone, iPad, and Android and cloud-based archive storage of non-DICOM data such as prescriptions and reports.” About CoActiv CoActiv Medical™ is a leading healthcare software and IT systems provider offering a full line of PACS, digital image and data storage services and related solutions for hospitals, imaging facilities and medical practices of all sizes. Vue Cloud Services Now Live At Nij Smellinge Hospital …

GENEVA, Switz., November 14 ? Following a multi-year contract extension with Carestream Health, Vue Cloud Services are now live at Nij Smellinghe Hospital, the first hospital in The Netherlands to move to off-site storage and archiving using a Software-as-a Service (SaaS) model. For over a decade Nij Smellinge has partnered with Carestream for its healthcare information systems and this latest deal delivers Vue Cloud PACS and vendor-neutral Vue Cloud Archiving to facilitate fast, secure image and data access by onsite and remote clinicians without the burden of infrastructure management and costs. “We were facing increasing amounts of data, obsolescence of archives and unpredictable capital expenditure,” said Wim Loman, Head of IT at Nij Smellinge Hospital. “Now with Vue Cloud Services, Carestream takes care of everything for us and the fee-per-study structure means that we are able to confidently plan our finances. If we want to introduce a new modality that produces say 10,000 studies we know exactly what it will cost on an annual basis. Such knowledge is extremely useful in terms of TCO impact. “We now also enjoy increased levels of security,” added Wim Loman. “Carestream proactively monitor the system 24/7, which leaves us to redirect our time and resources elsewhere. The service is scalable and flexible allowing us to make adjustments with the ebb and flow of workflow and managing migrations is also a thing of the past as Carestream does this for us.” With the Vue Cloud Services contract, Nij Smellinghe receives continuous technology improvements and built-in disaster recovery. “Not only is all our patient data store in the data centre, we also have copies onsite in case contact is lost between the data centre and the hospital,” continued Wim Loman. “Carestream also make back-ups so there are always three copies of patient data at any one time.” Nij Smellinge Hospital serves a population of approx.125,000 in the north of the country and has a reputation for delivering high quality health services through the use of advanced technologies. It was the first hospital in The Netherlands to move to remote archiving 3 years ago, and this latest contract extension for Vue Cloud PACS provides increased operational advantages to that service. The radiology department currently manages around 85,000 studies annually, a figure that is growing at approx. 5% a year. Customers across the world are increasingly purchasing Carestream Health’s cloud-based RIS/PACS and vendor-neutral archiving services to streamline operational efficiencies and reduce costs. Vue PACS Services deliver full PACS functionality for image review, storage and distribution throughout the enterprise including delivering advanced reading tools to remote radiologists. Vue Archive Services offers virtualized, vendor-neutral long-term storage as well as data protection, and disaster recovery of clinical data such as DICOM images and XDS documents. The Vue Portal enables healthcare providers that use the company’s archive service to allow access to that data by authorized clinicians anywhere in the world through a simple Internet connection. About Carestream Health Carestream Health is a worldwide provider of dental and medical imaging systems and healthcare IT solutions; molecular imaging systems for life science research and drug discovery/development; x-ray film and digital x-ray systems for non-destructive testing; and advanced materials for the precision films and electronics markets.
